The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is a very large-scale integrated circuit, serving as the core of a computer's processing and control. Its primary functions are interpreting computer instructions and processing data within computer software.

The CPU mainly comprises the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), cache memory, and the data, control, and status buses that connect them. Together with internal memory and input/output (I/O) devices, it forms the three core components of an electronic computer.

Logically, the CPU can be divided into three modules: the control unit, the arithmetic unit, and the storage unit. These three parts are connected by the CPU's internal buses.
